(1) And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Gaililee; and the mother of Jesus was there: (2) And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. (3) And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.(4) Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. (5) His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he said unto you do it. (6) And there were set there six water pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three for kind apiece. (7) Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. (8) And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. ( John 2:1-8 KJV)

I am not going to lie. This is one of the passages of scripture that makes me chuckle in amazement. The account of Jesus first miracle, teaches us a lot. Even some 2000 plus years later. Scripture tells us that there was a marriage in Cana. Scripture also makes a point in letting us know that the mother of Jesus was there. As well as Jesus and his disciples. We know that while at the wedding the wine had run out. In those days a marriage feast would last up to seven days. To run out of wine would have been a social humiliation for the bride and groom. That could have lasted years. The bible doesn’t tell us exactly how Mary knew that the wine had run out, but it’s safe to assume that she was one of the few who may have known. Knowing the urgency of this matter in verse three Mary tells Jesus that there was no wine. Now here is the part that makes me chuckle every time I read it. Jesus response to her. Which was basically what does that have to do with me. It is not yet my time. Funnier yet was Mary response to hearing Jesus say that. Was to turn to the servants and tell them. Whatever he tells you to do. Do it. Personally, if it were me there would have been no miracle of Jesus turning the water into wine. Cause I would have taken Jesus reply as a no, that it wasn’t His problem. Oh how wrong I would have been! The fact that Mary was able to turn right around and say to the servants. Do whatever it is that he tells you. Showed faith on her part, because of her relationship with Christ. She knew without a shadow of a doubt that Jesus would honor her request. We to can have that same assurance. That because of our relationship and the trust that we have put in Christ. That he will not only hear us, but that he would also answer us. In Matthew 21:22 scripture tells us And all things, whatsoever he shall ask for in prayer, believing he shall receive. You might say well Mary didn’t ask for this in prayer. She was standing face to face with Jesus. Yes, she was but she also had a request, a petition that she had before him. We may not be able to be face to face with Jesus, but do you know that every time we pray. We come into the presence of God! Another thing that I want to note. Is that Mary’s petition was on the behalf of someone else. This was not a selfish request on her behalf. Mary was concerned enough about the reputation of another. That she asked Jesus to remedy the situation. How many of us would actually go to God on behalf of someone else like Mary did? Sure we pray for things like healing of sickness and infirmities. How about things that we don’t deem as important? Like maybe praying that a friend has a way to work. Or enough money to feed their family. I believe that one of the reasons. Why Jesus honored her request because she requested it on behalf of someone who didn’t even know that they could ask him for themselves. Remember this was moments before Jesus very first miracle. To the guest at the wedding with the exception of Mary. No one really knew who he was. Even though his disciples were there. They were just about to find out who Jesus actually was. Mary then is a representation of Christians today. Going to Jesus on the behalf of someone who is not yet aware of who He is.

His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. ( John 2:5 KJV)

This would have been the stumbling stone for many Christians now. The whatsoever ever he says to do. Do it. As I was reading this verse. I begin to understand that the majority of the time God ask us to do something. It will not make sense to us and because it doesn’t make sense. We can become bull headed and stubborn. The Bible however, is filled with accounts of God asking his people to do things that didn’t make sense. It didn’t make sense for the Israelites to march around the walls of Jericho for seven days. Six of those days in complete silence and on the seventh day to march around seven times and at the seventh time to shout. (Joshua 6:1-27). It didn’t make sense for Gideon in the Bible to downgrade his army from 22,000 to 300 men (Judges 6). It didn’t make sense for Elisha the prophet to instruct Naaman the Host of the Syrian army to dip seven times in the Jordan River. Which by the way was a dirty filthy river ( 2 Kings 5). None of these things made sense. Yet if the Israelites would have never did what God asked of them. They would have never obtained access to the promised land. Gideon would have never defeated his enemies. Naaman would have never been cured of his leprosy. I am beginning to understand that the whatsoever in my walk with Christ. Meaning even those things that don’t make sense in our finite minds. It means to trust him. Even when it seems foolish to us.

In verses 6-8 scripture tells us that there were six water pots of stone. Jesus told the servants to fill up these jars. When the servants filled them to the brim. Jesus then instructs them to draw it out and present it to the governor of the feast. Something caught my attention in this. The Bible never tells us how Jesus turned the water into wine. It doesn’t tell us that Jesus prayed over it. Or that He spoke to it. It didn’t say that He laid hands on the jars. Scripture only tells us that when the servants did what was told. Jesus then had them draw out the wine. This tells us that we may not always know how God will work out that miracle in our lives but the miracle comes in the obeying. Can you imagine being one of the servants? Trying to explain how Jesus turned water into wine. They wouldn’t be able to. A lot of the things that God will do for us. We simply won’t be able to explain it. This was also a lesson to His disciples. That Jesus is more than just a great teacher. With deep spiritual knowledge. The disciples now saw him as a miracle worker. Sometimes we need to see Jesus as much more than a great teacher. We need to see him as the miracle worker. That answers our prayers. We must also realize that sometimes our prayers are answered by the doing of his word. In the whatsoever he tells us to do. Had the servants would have grumbled that this makes no sense. They would have never witnessed the miracle of the water being turned into wine. Question. What is that thing in your life that God is asking you to do that don’t make sense? I say whatsoever it is do it. For without it you will not see the miracle of God that in your life.
